Canadian PM Murders Canada

Two months ago, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was riding high. He won re-election and gained seats in Parliament. Too bad he is a complete dick because now his political life is unraveling. The opposition parties in Canada got together and decided to kick Harper to the curb.
Three opposition parties united against Harper, charging he has failed to insulate Canada from the global financial crisis. The credit crisis and a global sell off of commodities have slowed Canada's resource-rich economy, and the finance minister said last week he expects a recession.

The Liberals, New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois, which together control a majority of parliament's 308 seats, signed a pact agreeing to vote this coming Monday to oust Harper and setting the structure for their proposed coalition government.
So, what to do? How about shut the fucker down?
Less than two months after winning re-election, Harper successfully asked the unelected representative of the head of state for the power to close down Parliament until Jan. 26, hoping to buy enough time to develop a stimulus package that could prop up the economy.
Good timing. Should buy just enough time to destroy Canada's economy. Now Harper's spending options are limited under their constitution, as is his ability to make decisions. Should make for an awesome couple of months for Canada, as other countries make huge moves to thwart a depression.

But the exciting news is Harper can open a new parliament session with a new "throne speech."

Seriously, what the fuck? A throne speech? That's so 1600's.

Prime Minister Harper will be able to open a new session with a new throne speech, but is, under the Canadian constitution, limited in his spending options and ability to make decisions. In effect the Governor General froze like a dear in the headlights, and has paralyzed Canada's government for almost two months as the economic crisis deepens.

Parliament is paralyzed, on the other hand - what would they do, if it wasn't paralyzed? Do you think Bloc/NDP/Liberals would be able to work out any coherent strategy together? It seems all governments in the world are doing the same - just pouring the liquidity into endangered institutions and companies, that's all. All that great "anti-crisis fight" is just masked desperation, no matter who's doing it...
